COWAN GLOBAL EDUCATION & TRAINING

"Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today."     (Malcolm X)

Cowan Global offer our clients a range of Education & Training options.

We offer a range of dedicated workshops all written to address specific needs and gaps in current workshop availability.

We design bespoke workshops and courses around client requirements thus servicing an identified shortfall in knowledge within an organisation.

We can provide tutors to deliver the clients own, existing course or workshop.

Our range of workshops cater to business, to third sector organisations, to the world of sport, in fact to any organisation seeking to support and advance its own workforce development or to provide opportunities to partner organisations.

All of our workshops are guaranteed to be free of unnecessary jargon, will only use acronyms after explaining them and use plain, understandable English in their delivery. We are happy to adapt to audience need (provided we are notified in advance). For example, we have delivered workshops for multi-lingual audiences aided by translators, audiences with hearing disabilities aided by signers and to visually impaired audiences using appropriate aids.

All of our workshops can be also delivered as lectures although we advise clients that workshop is the format that is likely to support learning the best.

If you are organising a seminar or conference we would be delighted to talk on one or more of the topics below.

The following is a snapshot of Cowan Global's Education & Training offer. If you don't see what you are looking for, please ask. And remember, we provide a bespoke workshop design service too!

EDUCATION & TRAINING FOR ALL SECTORS:

Workshop: ANALYSING YOUR CONSULTATION
Description: Regardless of the depth and quality of your consultation, you will only get the very best from the 'intelligence' that you gather if you understand how to interpret it correctly. This workshop looks at ways in which you can maximise the information gained via your consultation.
Suitable for: All organisations who are serious about growth and development, especially those involved in developing strategies and those involved in consulting. Suitable for everyone who wants to make the time spent consulting an effective and efficient use of time.
Not suitable for: Those who believe they have all the solutions and do not need to share the knowledge, skills and experience of others and who are not interested in building strong, long lasting working partnerships.
Workshop: STRATEGY: What it is and how to get it right

Suitable for: Directors, managers and staff responsible for developing and driving strategies. Also suitable for those seeking a fresh perspective and for anyone seeking to improve their strategic planning ability.
Not suitable for: The workshop is not suitable for those who like to use jargon to confuse people nor is it suitable for those who think processes and templates should rule common sense.
Workshop: COACHING SKILLS FOR BUSINESS LEADERS

But what are the key skills which make a successful coach and how can you employ those skills in your business? This workshop employs real lessons from real high performance coaching experience and translates them into simple to follow, practical pieces of advice. The workshop is led by Jim Cowan, not only a qualified coach but also a proven and successful coach with a CV that includes a world record holder, a world champion and many other top sports people, clubs and organisations from around the world.

The workshop is especially beneficial for organisations who rely on good will and/or volunteers in order to achieve their goals.

Workshop: A GUIDE TO MENTORING FOR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

All managers and leaders who wish to gain a clear understand of how powerful mentoring can be in the workplace, when applied properly.

Workshop: REVIEWING, GOAL SETTING, TEAM BUILDING AND PLANNING: A guide for business leaders and their staff
Description:

Does everyone in your business know not only the company's goals but also their own personal goals within the bigger structure? How much scope have they been given to secure appropriate resources around achieving their goal? Do your workforce all have personal plans in place which focus on both company and personal achievement?

In a world where many organisations plan strategy in isolation of structure and then fail to mesh the two, it is highly unlikely you do.

This workshop introduces simple, proven methods applied by top Olympic sportspeople in achieving their success and applies and personalises them to your workforce.

This workshop was described by one attendee as "quite simply the most valuable, informative and instructive day of my life."

Suitable for: Everyone who is planning for success. Anyone who is in pursuit of a goal or goals whether professional, personal or both.
Not suitable for: Dreamers who would rather discuss what they could do in place of actually achieving things.
Workshop: PLANNING FOR PERFORMANCE: Lessons from elite sport that can help you in business
Description: Planning for elite sport has to be a precise process which leaves nothing to chance; there is little point in an athlete reaching peak performance a month after the Olympic final! Jim Cowan has worked with some of the world's best performers including a world record holder and a world champion and in this workshop he shares some of the lessons learned.
Suitable for: Anyone who wants to improve their planning to maximise the exploitation of the potential in both your business and your market.
Not suitable for: Anyone who believes in mediocrity as an aspiration.
Workshop: HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM SPONSORSHIP IN PROMOTING YOUR BRAND
Description:

From very small, local events to the Olympic Games and every size in between, it seems everyone is after 'sponsorship'. What is sponsorship? Should your company get involved in sponsorship? What is CSR sponsorship? How do you make your sponsorship pay? Is it just advertising or can it be used to achieve other goals?

If you are thinking of getting your company involved in sponsorship or you are already involved and wondering how to make your investment pay, this workshop will provide you with the answers.

Suitable for: All of those thinking of or already using sponsorship as part of their marketing mix. Event organisers seeking sponsorship who want a greater appreciation of what their partners are (should be) receiving in return. Those who have been involved in sponsorships which did not provide the expected returns and want to understand why.
Not suitable for: Those with no interest in sponsorship or those involved in sponsorship who do not want to see a return on their investment.
Workshop: FIRST AID IN THE WORKPLACE
Description:

All businesses should have properly trained and qualified 'first-aiders' on hand, in the workplace. Common sense suggests training more than the minimum requirement to ensure cover during absence for any reason. Whatever your first aid training requirements, we can provide them with recognised, certificated workshops and courses.

Our First Aid courses are delivered by NUCO First Aid Trainer/Assessors.

Suitable for: Everyone who recognises their responsibility to provide adequate first aid cover in the workplace.
Not suitable for: Irresponsible people/companies!

If you don't see what you are looking for above, or if the description is close to but not quite exactly what you are seeking why not give us a call to discuss a bespoke workshop designed specifically to your requirements?

Workshop: REVIEWING, GOAL SETTING, TEAM BUILDING & PLANNING FOR SPORTS PERFORMERS & THEIR COACHES

Not suitable for: Dreamers and wasters. Talented people who are looking to waste their talent.
Workshop: EFFECTIVE MENTORING FOR SPORTS COACHES AND SPORTS PERFORMERS
Description: Mentoring has become a popular term in today's world of sport yet few who apply it understand what mentoring is. This workshop takes you through the different definitions of mentoring and explains why what most people think of as mentoring actually isn't. We introduce different methods of mentoring which can be applied depending on individual need and their stage of development. The concept of 'pure mentoring' is introduced and explained, one of the most powerful yet under utilised methods for assisting learning and personal development available.
Suitable for: All coaches and performers interested in maximising their own development and supporting the development of others.
Not suitable for: Those who would prefer to learn via what is given to them by others instead of learning how to seek out what they actually need.
Workshop: SPONSORSHIP & COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR SPORTS CLUBS

The workshop discusses the differences between donations, funding and sponsorship before exploring how to go about finding and retaining sponsorship for your club or event.

Simple proven ideas and lessons are applied that have been successful for organisations small and large.

Not suitable for: Go it alone clubs in no need of sponsorship or other support.
Workshop: PLANNING FOR SUCCESSFUL SPORTS DEVELOPMENT
Description:

This workshop examines what sports development is and looks at some of the guiding principles which should guide all sports development planning. The workshop examines the sports development continuum and discusses what successfully delivering that continuum means to the planner.

Issues such as satisfying funders, delivering changing political agendas, building in sustainability and fully exploiting partnership working are all covered as are the principles behind horizontal and vertical integration of plans.

Planning for successful sports development will make the difference between being very busy running round in circles and successfully delivering relevant, challenging, sustainable, measured outcomes.

This workshop is a 'must attend' for all sports development professionals whether just starting out or more experienced and seeking to get back in touch with basic principles and concepts.

Suitable for: All sports development professionals; anyone wanting to work in sports development; sports development and management undergraduates; anyone with an interest in developing sport whether club volunteer or NGB employee.

Workshop: AN INTRODUCTION TO NUTRITION FOR YOUNG SPORTS PERFORMERS & THEIR PARENTS
Description:

"What, yet Another workshop covering sports nutrition?" we hear you ask. Yes, and we make no apology. For how many of those other nutrition workshops fail to remember one very basic point? Most young people do not cook for themselves, the person (or people) planning their nutritional intake is mum and/or dad and if that parent is not at the workshop the lessons learned are unlikely to be applied.

This workshop asks young performer's parents to attend and then takes them through the basic principles of eating for sport, what is good, what is bad and what are just myths. Oh yes; and why eating healthily is often cheaper than eating poorly.

It seems crazy to us but some parents spend a fortune on subscriptions and coaching and kit and then undermine it all with poor dietary choices in the kitchen. For a lot less than the cost of a pair of training shoes, this workshop is vital for the parents of ambitious young sportspeople.

Those who cook for themselves are also welcome!

Suitable for: Those who purchase and prepare the food in the homes of sports performers.
Not suitable for: Those who don't!
Workshop: PREHABLITATION: The avoidance of injury
Description:

Over 90% of soft tissue injuries suffered by sports people are avoidable! Read that again; that's right, over 90%.

We spend a fortune on rehabilitation of injured sports people every year in the UK and virtually nothing on prehabilitation, that is common sense measures that drastically reduce the likelihood of most of those injuries.

This workshop introduces those basic, simple, common sense measures and explains when and how to use them.

Of course, if you'd prefer to miss the big match or even the Olympic Games or spend a fortune on rehabilitation because of an avoidable injury that's your affair.

Alternatively, for less than half the price of one session with most physiotherapists you could attend this workshop.

Suitable for: Those who prefer to spend their time training and competing.
Not suitable for: Those who prefer to spend their time in treatment and thinking "if only..."
Workshop: ANYONE CAN TRAIN HARD - THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAINING SMART
Description:

If training harder than the next guy was all it took to be the world's best then training would be easy; just do more of it with heavier loads at faster speeds....etc.

But we all know that isn't the case even if sometimes we act like we forgot!

This workshop looks at why training smart is so important and introduces some simple ways to bring 'smart training' into your training programme and lifestyle.

Nothing on this workshop is rocket science, just plain, good old common sense.

Suitable for: Performers who always seem to just miss selection, are injured at the most important time or struggle to peak when it matters. And the coaches of those performers!
Not suitable for: Those who already train smart! (Although are you sure you couldn't be smarter?)
Workshop: HIGH QUALITY RECOVERY AS PART OF A SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE TRAINING PROGRAMME
Description:

It is often overlooked by coaches and performers alike that sportspeople do not getting fitter during training, it is only after training through appropriate recovery that the body adapts to the training undertaken to become fitter.

This workshop looks at how to add high quality recovery to high quality training in order to maximise the benefits of both and also answers the question; how much is too much?

Suitable for: All coaches and sportspeople interested in raising their performance.
Not suitable for: All coaches and sportspeople happy with where they are.
Workshop: LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT: Putting the theory into real world practice
Description:

Since it first appeared a little over a decade ago, Long Term Athlete Development has been adopted by coaches, NGBs and other sports bodies across the UK and around the world.

Organisations around the world have come to us for advice and we are currently the only LTAD specialists in the UK utilising the most up to date seven stage model and incorporating the needs of athletes with a disability (although unfortunately, research in this area is sparse).

Our workshop examines where the principles behind LTAD came from, specifically what each stage means for coaches, teachers and other 'sport deliverers' and examines remedial work for performers who have not maximised each critical developmental window.

Suitable for: Coaches, teachers, sports development professionals, health workers anyone who is involved in working 'physical activity'.
Not suitable for: Only those not involved in physical development of people between the ages of 1 and 100.
Workshop: LONG TERM FITNESS DEVELOPMENT FOR SPORT
Description: A look at what training for fitness could and should be done as a child develops and grows into adulthood and at what age/stage it should be done. Examples of ways to implement are demonstrated.
Suitable for: All those involved in the development of children and in remedial fitness work with adults; not just those in sport but teachers and health workers too.
Not suitable for: Those who do not want to see shortfalls in the UK's current curriculum for physical education and sport exposed!
Workshop: PHYSICAL LITERACY FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS
Description:

Good physical literacy is vital if young people are going to grow with the ability to deliver their talent in sport. It is also vital for the general population in the enjoyment of all physical activity, not just sport making it an overlooked element in the fight against obesity. Improved physical literacy could also contribute to reducing the load on the NHS as better movement skills and fitness would assist greatly in (for example) the area of trips, slips and falls.

And yet it is not covered as part of teacher training nor is it a requirement of the school curriculum.

This workshop will equip teachers to introduce physical literacy skills and training to their students at the appropriate time during their development.

Suitable for: All primary school teachers and secondary PE specialists. We'd love to see a few decision makers from the DFES along too!
Not suitable for: Those who do not want to see shortfalls in the UK's current curriculum for physical education and sport exposed!
Workshop: PHYSICAL LITERACY FOR SPORTS COACHES
Description: This workshop is similar to Physical Literacy For Teachers but with a heavy bias towards sport and performance development.
Suitable for: All coaches from those introducing sport to young people for the first time to those working with world class performers.
Not suitable for: Those uninterested in helping sportspeople fully deliver their talent.
Workshop: FIRST AID FOR SPORTS COACHES (and other club volunteers)
Description:

All sports clubs should have properly trained and qualified 'first-aiders' on hand. Common sense suggests training more than the minimum requirement to ensure cover through absence (e.g. holidays or sickness). For coaches in some sports, there is the added need for first aid cover when coaching away from the club base. And remember, many sports club and coach insurance providers will not pay out should reasonable measures, which include first aid cover, not have been taken.

Whatever your first aid training requirements, we can provide them with certificated workshops and courses recognised by NGBs and facility providers such as local authorities.

Our First Aid courses are delivered by NUCO First Aid Trainer/Assessors.

Suitable for: Everyone who recognises their responsibility to provide adequate first aid cover in the during training and for the club.
Not suitable for: Irresponsible people/clubs/coaches.
Workshop: PAUL EVANS MARATHON WORKSHOPS
Description:

Paul Evans is the UK's leading distance runner over the last 2 decades. He won the Chicago Marathon, finished second in New York and had a string of top finishes in London, including a third place. Not only that he also set a UK record for the half marathon and was the leading non-African in two consecutive Olympic 10,000 metres finals.

We have Paul with Jim Cowan to deliver the 'Paul Evans Marathon Workshops'. They can be run consecutively over a weekend or as a series of four spaced about a month apart and tied to key landmarks in the preparation for a marathon.

Covering everything from planning your training to what to eat; from when to race and over what distance to how to accommodate 'real life' while you train; from what can go wrong and how to avoid it to avoiding injury; from being on your best on the big day to what happens after you've finished.

When Paul and Jim delivered these workshops for England Athletics, they received the highest rated feedback ever seen for any England Athletics workshop. Think what they could do for you!

The workshops can be delivered in club houses, health clubs, rented rooms, pretty much anywhere really (we've even delivered it in an unheated dance studio in mid-winter because that is where we were wanted). If you are serious about running your first marathon or improving your PB, the Paul Evans Marathon Workshops are a must!

Suitable for: Anyone thinking of or preparing to run a marathon. Those preparing for shorter distances can also gain substantial benefit from these workshops.
Not suitable for: Couch potatoes!
Workshop: TACTICS FOR MIDDLE DISTANCE ATHLETES
Description:

Today's British middle distance athletes do not benefit from the same opportunities to learn how to employ their own tactics and cope with the tactics of other athletes in the same way as previous generations. This can often be cruelly exposed when they arrive at a major championship lacking the vital piece of experience to cope with how their race (be it heat or final) pans out.

Yet modern coach education has not adapted to this need and coaches (and therefore the athletes they train) are not learning the ways and means of tactical racing.

It doesn't have to be that way and this workshop tackles the issue head on. The workshop looks at every conceivable variation on tactical middle distance racing, how to prepare for it, how to counter it and how to impose your own preferred tactics on a race.

Suitable for: Athletes and their coaches who aspire to championship competition and medal winning performances.
Not suitable for: Athletes who are happy just playing follow my leader.
Workshop: RACE APPROPRIATE SPEED ENDURANCE FOR MIDDLE DISTANCE ATHLETES
Description: All middle distance coaches understand the need to combine endurance and speed within their athlete's training, but how many understand how to get that mix right? This key element in the preparation of middle distance athletes is covered during this workshop which looks at different methods to employ the right mix and type of speed endurance within the athlete's training.
Suitable for: All middle distance coaches and the athletes they look after.
Not suitable for: Middle distance coaches and athletes who prefer excuses to performance.
Workshop: TECHNIQUE FOR MIDDLE DISTANCE ATHLETES
Description:

Athletics aficionados often talk of 'the technical events' suggesting that technique is not important to middle and long distance athletes. We prefer the George Orwell view; all events are technical but some are more technical than others.

To those who say it is just putting one foot in front of the other, we point out that no child is born able to run, they have to learn how. And any physical movement that has to be learned can be honed and improved.

This workshop looks at why technique is important for middle distance athletes, what good technique looks like, the difference between technique and style and how to add technique training without having to drop other vital components and without adding hours to the time needed for training.

Suitable for: All middle distance coaches/athletes.
Not suitable for: Joggers, shufflers and athletes content with life at the back of the pack.
Workshop: COPING WITH BACK TO BACK HARD DAYS
Description:

Any athlete who aspires to competing in a major championship will, at some stage, need to be able to cope with 'back to back hard days'. Why? Because if they can't they will not cope will heats and finals (or, in some events three rounds before a final). At a previous major championship, one British medal hope was knocked out in the semi final and complained after that she was not ready for so many rounds! We ask; why not? They weren't dropped on you unexpectedly, the timetable was published months in advance!

This workshop looks at how to introduce back to back hard days in training, how to simulate the effects of heats and finals and, importantly, how to do it all without breaking the athlete down and causing injury! After all, the purpose is to train an athlete who is ready, not one who would have been ready if he/she wasn't injured!

Suitable for: Coaches and athletes serious about competing well in championships with heats and finals.
Not suitable for: Coaches and athletes who think just making the team is success enough.
